When I was 4 years old, my mother told me the Cucuy (Mexican boogeyman) was coming for me because I was misbehaving. When she described him to me, I was terrorized and immediately cleaned up my act. When I got older, I knew it wasn’t real, yet the terror I had experienced as a child rooted itself deep down in my soul. To this day, I’m still very uncomfortable in the dark.
